Product Development Engineer
About us
We are a European scale-up dedicated to developing cutting-edge, automated wind-assisted propulsion systems. We provide a turnkey solution for shipowners and shipping companies looking to reduce fuel costs and emissions. Our vision is simple yet ambitious – we aim to power the world with wind.
Imagine a world where the vast oceans are effortlessly traversed by the clean, boundless power of the wind. At bound4blue, we are turning this dream into reality. We're not just creating wind propulsion systems but revolutionizing the maritime industry, one sustainable voyage at a time. While bringing sails back to ships may seem challenging, we are more than prepared for it. We are innovators who understand the perfect harmony between nature and technology.
About the Role
We are looking for a Product Development Engineer to join our Product team and contribute to the evolution of bound4blue’s eSAIL technology from an engineering perspective.
This role focuses on developing, evaluating, and validating new mechanical and structural concepts for our product. You will be responsible for exploring innovative solutions, assessing their technical feasibility, and supporting the transition of selected developments from concept and prototype stages into validated product improvements.
Working closely with the Product Director and cross-functional engineering teams, you will play a key role in strengthening the technical robustness, performance, and manufacturability of our eSAIL systems.
Responsibilities
Contribute to the definition and maintenance of the Product Technology Roadmap in close alignment with the Product Director, ensuring consistency with long-term product strategy and objectives.
Lead and support technology development initiatives aimed at improving key product attributes such as structural performance, cost-efficiency, weight reduction, reliability, repairability, and manufacturability.
Perform mechanical and structural analysis, calculations, and design studies to evaluate new concepts, materials, components, and design solutions.
Propose, design, and support testing activities (laboratory, prototype, or field testing) to validate new technical solutions and assess their feasibility for product integration.
Create, review, and maintain assigned technical documentation (e.g. ETS, INS, ETD), ensuring technical accuracy, completeness, and consistency, as delegated by the Product Director.
Collaborate with suppliers of critical technologies or components, supporting technical evaluation and knowledge transfer activities.
Support the handover of validated technologies and solutions to the Operations team prior to standard product implementation.
Promote effective communication and technical alignment with cross-functional teams, including Operations, Automation & Control, Aerodynamics, Naval Architecture, and Marketing.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of product development processes, technical standards, and engineering best practices.
Requirements
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
Solid experience in mechanical and/or structural engineering roles, ideally related to product development, R&D, or advanced engineering.
Strong background in structural analysis, mechanical design, and engineering calculations.
Hands-on experience with FEM tools such as ANSYS or equivalent structural analysis software.
Experience with 3D CAD tools (e.g. SolidWorks or similar).
Experience in the naval industry is highly valued; experience in related industries such as wind energy, offshore, or heavy industrial equipment is also relevant.
Analytical mindset, curiosity, and a strong problem-solving orientation.
Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional engineering environments.
Professional level of Spanish and English.
What Awaits You at bound4blue
A hands-on role at the core of product innovation and engineering development.
The opportunity to influence the technical evolution of a unique, high-impact product.
Collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams in a cutting-edge clean-tech environment.
A scale-up context where ideas are tested, decisions are close to the engineering work, and technical contributions are highly visible.
