Data Scientist
About Us
We are a European startup dedicated to developing cutting-edge, automated wind-assisted propulsion systems. We aim to provide a turnkey solution for shipowners and shipping companies seeking to reduce fuel costs and emissions. Our vision is simple yet ambitious—we aim to power the world with wind.
Imagine a world where the vast oceans are effortlessly traversed using the clean and boundless power of the wind. At bound4blue, we are turning this dream into reality. We're not just creating wind propulsion systems but revolutionizing the maritime industry, one sustainable voyage at a time. While bringing sails back to ships may seem challenging, we are more than prepared for it. We are innovators who understand the perfect harmony between nature and technology.
About the Role
The Data Scientist will be responsible for designing and implementing mathematical models, developing robust analytical solutions, and integrating AI algorithms into deployment pipelines. The role requires close collaboration with multiple teams, including Product Development, Automation & Control, Aerodynamics, and Vessel Performance, to ensure analytical tools and models are aligned with product requirements and system architecture.
This position sits at the intersection of mathematics and engineering, translating complex concepts into actionable insights and scalable models that directly support decision-making and product evolution.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, validate, and implement mathematical and physical models to solve real-world engineering challenges.
- Apply vectorization and numerical computing techniques to efficiently process large datasets.
- Develop and deploy machine learning and artificial intelligence models into production environments.
- Collaborate closely with Engineering, Product, Analytics & Control, and Vessel Performance teams to ensure models are appropriately integrated into our systems.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of deployed models, identifying opportunities for refinement.
- Participate in the design of experiments, sensitivity analysis, and numerical simulations to support R&D initiatives.
Required Competencies
- PhD (preferred) or master’s degree in mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
- Strong foundation in mathematical modeling, linear algebra, differential calculus, statistics, and numerical methods.
- Proficiency in scientific programming with Python and libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, Numba, Pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
- Familiarity with deployment pipelines and containerization tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Experience handling large datasets both locally and in cloud environments.
- Solid understanding of computational optimization and performance via vectorization and matrix operations.
- Technical English proficiency (ability to read and write scientific literature and documentation).
- Experience with physical simulations, system dynamics, or solving differential equations is a strong plus.
- Knowledge of mathematical optimization (linear, nonlinear, combinatorial) and experience with model versioning and monitoring tools is desirable.
- Mindset oriented toward applied problem-solving and industrial innovation, ideally with experience beyond the traditional software domain.
